need advice...

we're off to babies r us tomorrow to pick up our crib.  i decided on the jenny lind style back in 2004, when we were pregnant the first time.  i've always loved it, so it just seemed like a no brainer when we got ready to prepare our nursery for "real" this time.  however - now that we are actually going to get the crib tomorrow it has dawned on us - what about the mattress?

i don't suppose you can test them out and lay on them like you would at a furniture store where they sell grown up people's mattresses?  so how do you know what kind to purchase?  i've seen some awful reviews, and other reviews that are pretty outstanding - sometimes these are for the same mattress.  so - how do you know which one to get?

any advice?

I say, pick up a cute little kid you see walking around and have them test out the mattress for you! In all seriousness though, anything you pick will never be as comfy to your baby as you holding them and cuddling them. Just ask Meal and Ily. - Melanie-

both of ours came from wal mart and i think they are sealy brand. not that it really matters. we have sort of heavy boys and they have worked just fine. the mattress just has to be kind of firm/stiff for safety reasons, i think. also, they all have that awkward plasticy cover and then you can get a cottony mattress cover to go over it. so excited you all are going to get the crib. can't wait to see your nursery come together!

I recently bought the Safety 1st - Sweet Dreams Crib and Toddler Bed Mattress. It got good reviews. Don't spend too much but make sure it will be firm. Great books to buy include Baby Bargains http://amzn.com/1889392332 and Baby 411 http://amzn.com/1889392340
Happy shopping!! XO Kierstin

Thanks everyone! I think we've learned that the most important things are that the crib mattress is firm, supportive, and fits the crib frame perfectly. We tested a few out at Babies R Us and then compared some at Target. We saw a huge difference in the majority of them and have now narrowed it down to two mattresses. Now hopefully we will get a coupon or some type of sale before we have to purchase anything else!
